The glitzy Trump International Hotel is the backdrop for a human rights issue that crosses party lines: Human Trafficking

page-1img_4498It is official! For the next 60 years, Donald Trump will have a home in Washington on Pennsylvania Avenue next to the White House at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The Old Post Office building, which had fallen on hard times, has been refurbished and leased as a luxury hotel to the Trump Organization. By transforming the historic building into a glitzy Trump International Hotel, it is expected that the hotel will become the hottest new in-spot in Washington to stay and indulge yourself in costly luxury. Like Donald’s dream to Make America Great Again, the Trump Enterprises with a graceful wave of their magic wand have turned the long-neglected Historic Post Office into a Trump landmark with over-sized crystal chandeliers and an atrium with a skylight view to the stars.

Amidst all this extravagant luxury, is the elegant Lincoln Library. In this historic room with natural woods, trimmed in cream and gold, the non-page-2profit Airline Ambassadors International (AAI) held a cocktail reception Tuesday, September 27 for celebrities, socialites, and leaders from Hollywood and Washington committed to fighting human trafficking.

Donald, wasn’t there to share his celebrity with the guests, but despite his absence, the evening was a huge success. Several hundred people, many of celebrity status, gathered together comfortably to mingle and hear the speakers report on a major world problem.

Nancy Rivard, who heads AAI, has been responsible for helping build what began as a grass-roots non profit charity and turning it into a major international advocacy group raising awareness and fighting human trafficking. Under her guidance, the organization that began with just a few airline employees expanded into a network of students, medical professionals, families and retirees who volunteer their time to share their skills to provide, protect, and advocate for orphans and vulnerable children.

img_2471-e1473613504769downloadEmmy award winning television journalist Chris Hansen, Dateline NBC “To Catch a Predator,” hosted the event. “Human trafficking,” Hansen said, “has become the second biggest crime, next to drugs, and like drugs, it is ruining innocent lives. It is our duty to educate ourselves to recognize & report it to the proper authorities. The buying and selling of women, girls and boys is a frightening modern day form of slavery, and the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world.”

AAI has provided 45 Airport trainings on human trafficking to date, training over 4,000 frontline employees on the indicators of human trafficking, learning to spot victims, hopefully before they are trafficked. Some of the signs victims often manifest include fear, shame or nervousness. Many reveal no control of their travels plans, or knowledge of where they are going. Such signature behavior is often a red flag that something is seriously wrong and needs to be reported to authorities.

Some of the other speakers included trafficking survivor Donna Hubbard who shared her touching childhood experience, and Eric Roberts (Julia Roberts’s brother) and Musician Keaton Simons, who previewed their new media campaign with the PSA “FIND Us.” This moving video highlighted the tragedy of what is happening world-wide, to some of the most vulnerable and innocent people – our children – trapped in sexual bondage. The Find US initiative will raise needed funds for the work of AAI and provide beds for trafficking victims in the United States. “Each week airline crew come in contact with thousands of people,” Rivard said, “and we are in the perfect position to spot the unusual and report it to authorities. That’s why AAI’s training is so vitally important. Hundreds of children have been saved, because our members alerted authorities to unusual behavior noted on board one of their planes.”

According to Rivard, the airlines is one of the swiftest and most convenient ways to move people from place to place. Airline crew are in the perfect position to spot trafficking and report it before it can become a tragedy for its victim. “Some of the life-saving services offered by our volunteers,” Rivard said, “include seeing to it that the children receive proper medical care and humanitarian aid at orphanages and clinics in remote communities.”

Rep Smith receives TIP Hero Award from Nancy Rivard

Seven members of Congress were honored with the AAI Trafficking in Persons, 2016 TIP Hero Award, for their leadership and support of training airline staffers on human trafficking awareness. Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) accepted the awards personally, from Nancy Rivard, and Benefit Chair, ML Murray. Senator Klobuchar (D-MN) and Representatives Mike Honda (D-CA), Jackie Speier (D-CA) and Dina Titus(D-NV) and Ted Yoho ( R-FL) provided glowing support with video messages. See this LINK

Perhaps the high point was during a special VIP tour led by Michael Damelincourt, managing director of Trump International Hotels, in which a handful of VIPs watched Daniel Mahdavian, director of food and beverages, amazingly de-cork a magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champage with a saber.

This month our escort team coordinated the largest ever medical escort trip!  Enjoy pic below and see letter from our Coordinator Margaret Whitehead below:
 changing-the-gaurdimg_7016
Last night we brought 5 little ones from Burkina Faso into CMH for various surgeries. This is the largest group we’ve ever brought at one time and 3 ORD flight holding-babyattendants were escorts on the trip. In the 1st photo above, Bunny Doi is 2nd from left, then Anne Tepe (standing on left) and next to her Kyle Rogers. Anne and Kyle helped bring the kids from CDG and Bunny met them in PHL and helped on the last part of the trip. The other escorts were from MIA, DFW, PHL, and BOS so we had quite an eclectic crew. The photo was made in PHL where the international escorts handed the kids over to the domestic escorts. One of the kids has no legs, another has only one leg, 1 had a deformed leg, 1 had club feet, and the baby a cleft lip and palate. Sara Rosado (center in photo) from MIA Flight Service, has made many of these trips and said this was the most difficult one ever for her because the kids cried for their mommies off and on the entire flight. So sad……  Kyle, one of your ORD F/A’s, Roger, is one of our newer escorts and did an outstanding job on this trip. Everyone had praises for him.  Sometime ask him why he came off the airplane in CMH with a baby in one arm, a wadded up white dress shirt in the other hand that he promptly threw in the nearest trash can, and was wearing a soiled white tee shirt! He was laughing about it, though. Anne Tepe is one of our long time escorts and always does a good job and, of course you know Bunny Doi has done more escort trips than anyone. Bunny and Kyle were supposed to take a flight home last night from CMH but their Eagle flight got into CMH late from PHL and they misconnected. That was the biggest hiccup, but logistically it went extremely well.

So glad to of had you all for my first medical trip and what an eye opener it was for me, Anne said you can’t think about it till it’s over and trust me I haven’t stopped thinking about it! And his tie.. I wish I could send him one! Here’s pictures! Thank you all! “babytired-childrenwaiting-children

Preparing for Super-Bowl - Houston is on a mission to stop human trafficking in its tracks!

"It is often said that Houston is the hub for sex trafficking," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declared. "Let me just say that Houston will be the hub for the prevention and elimination of sex trafficking." So, local officials are joining the mayor in rolling out a new anti-human trafficking campaign to fight back. slide1"And we're not just doing it for the Super Bowl," Turner said. "We're doing it for everyday Houstonians and for people who visit our city." The Harris County District Attorney's office says it's handled over 1,700 human trafficking cases since February 2013 alone. "The reality is that human trafficking victims are subtly hidden in plain sight," Harris County D.A. Devon Anderson shared.   The D.A. says human trafficking does not just involve extreme cases where individuals are locked up in cellars. "Victims are not held in physical captivity, rather they are held by emotion and psychological restraints," she added. As Mayor Turner summed up, "If it's one person, it's one person too many-- especially when we are talking about our children."
Passage of the FAA Extension Bill in July 2016 requires every airline in the United States provide enhanced training to flight attendants “recognizing an responding to potential human trafficking victims.” This is an issue for airports as the perpetrators have been commonly found to be involved with drugs, arms and terrorism.
Corlene and Ecuadorian Street kidsCorlene Horan provided an escort for Healing the Children in SEA from UIO to PDX in 2001. The “kid” is now grown, married, and a father and wants to personally thank that escort for taking such good care of him on the trip. When Corlene heard this here was her response:
“Yes, I am totally thrilled!!  There is a long wonderful story that started with this escort!  The boy is Daniel Pincay and I escorted him and another young boy to Guayaquil in November, 2001.  I have his picture on my desk and think about him often with fond memories.
After escorting Daniel, I started doing mission trips to Guayaquil, bringing huge amounts of aid to INNFA government day care centers, through Carmen Figueroa and her sister, Zorayda, the doctor who arranged the escorts from Guayaquil.  I did several of these missions, each time spending an evening with the mission group at Daniel’s house.  We brought food, the family made food and Daniel’s dad played the guitar and sang.  It was always such a great party for mission participants!  After the missions ended, I stayed in touch with Carmen who checked-in on Daniel’s family for me.  It seems that the parents separated and the older daughter who occasionally emailed me but unfortunately, I lost touch.  I am delighted to be able make contact with Daniel again!
corlene - lst dinnerMayan Families in Guatemala forwarded to me a Facebook inquiry regarding a search for Daniel’s escort and mentioned my name.  That was a gal named Diane Hansen in the Seattle area code. I called her and left a message today and look forward to hearing from her.  With everyone’s help, we will be re-connected!”
Thanks to you both for helping to connect Daniel and me, once again!  I may have to take an Ecuador trip!
Have a wonderful summer!

More than 100,000 are children are in danger of being trafficked in the U.S. alone. Globally, there are 20 million victims enslaved today, more than at any other time in history. It is a sad fact that traffickers often use the speed and convenience of commercial air travel.

Jose Redondo6Day one of the 2016 Art Day Celebration started with sorting the T-shirts for the children which Jose Redondo did a beautiful job.
Day two the 100 t-shirts found themselves on the children participants and all I can say it was WOW!!   I hope these pictures can prove to you the impact that both your organization and generous donation had on our children. The beautiful array of colorful Angel T-shirts set the angelic atmosphere for our 5th Annual Art Day Celebration,
We pray that God dispatches the same Angels you so graciously sent to Haiti, back to you and your team at Angels of Hope and that they hover over your homes and your families.download
We love you and will hold you in our prayers.  Martine Longchamp”
martine2“PS – I forgot to tell you of the greatest thing ever that happened during ADC 2016, and I attribute it to the Angels being in the room. We had a young girl who lost a leg during the earthquake that came to the program. She was shy and wanted to stay hidden, unnoticed. Suddenly, when this beautiful angel got to wear the jewelry she made and got made-up her demeanor livened up so much that she willingly walked in our mini fashion show put up by my daughter Mayanda who lead the jewelry project. This was indeed a miracle. The shining star that fell upon the beautiful soul brightened everyone present as she leaped with her crutches to model her jewelry.

unnamed (2)Another young girl who was handicapped with a limped hand and who wanted to not be noticed as well (pictured in my previous email with Mayanda doing her makeup) felt the beauty that God deposited in her and also became alive and participated in the fashion show with a big smile on her face. Sherry Peters - IMG_7524This is the impact that we look to have and with your help we were able to accomplish our mission to nurture the orphaned, abandoned and deprived children of Haiti, and empower them to become the next generation  of God-fearing and productive Haitian citizens.
So I huge thank you to you Nancy and Arnie for believing in our work enough to partner with us.
Much love and blessings, Martine”

Hey everyone,

I couldn’t help but think about what we all accomplished in the past three days.  Just take a look at the numbers below and what it took to get these children here.  This is amazing to me that other than some delays to get the escorts back home, we pulled this off and got these three children to where they needed to be.  Challenges, there were many, from Cindy getting stuck in Sioux Falls the night before this trip, to Martine ending up at DFW the night before and having to go back to MIA before leaving for Paris, and lest we forget that Masako was not even confirmed on the CDG-PHL flight!  Did I mention that Masako’s trip 2 weeks before cancelled when she originally tried to go over and get Mariama? Everyone pulled together and helped each other out and we pulled it off.

So many many thanks to all of you and certainly to the people at QRD in Dallas who answered so many of my emails and frantic phone calls when things kept changing, Laetitia Alger-Schley who sends our police letters to CDG requesting their assistance in the transit of the kids and certainly ASF and their volunteers.  Without AA’s support, we could never do this. We did it, and we have all helped to make these three children’s lives better.  It really does take a village.  You should all be very proud!  Thank you!

Response from Escort Masako (Bunny) Doi:

“Thank YOU Wayne for coordinating the trip and worrying about us every step of the way. We are team!  And just imagine, by our efforts, we are part of life changing experience for these children. FYI, CDG police procedures are different every time: and you know I have done many. And this time, they kept us in the police station until almost 1 hour prior to departure. The police took our passports to the gate (I assume) instead of escorting us to the gate right away.  But it was easier on us as they did all the work for us. It definitely helped for me that ASF contacting Margaret and Wayne in advance to specify time and location. It worked so smoothly to meet my ASF escort and the child.  The police were so kind. Thank you so much!

Response from  Escort Martine Longchamp:
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve one of these beautiful little children. It gave me so much pleasure to fly with Boni and Cindy. And the kids were so adorable. I have put them in my prayers for their medical procedures to be successful and for speedy recovery. I would love to bring Florence back when she needs to go back home. Wayne thank you for your dedication and thanks for staying up late to stay in touch with Cindy and I during our many transition difficulties to and from Paris. Ladies it was a truly an honor to serve these children with all of you. This is what life is all about – helping humankind and helping each other. I am forever grateful to be part of such an amazing team of people.
May God enrich your lives and give you a double portion of blessings for all your troubles.
Much love, Martine”
