This summer AAI Volunteers coordinated escorts for 265 orphans – 200 from Latvia and Ukraine and 65 from China….in the largest single orphan airlift we have ever attempted!  Many thanks to Margaret Whitehead, Wayne Lee and Connie Lowry for their amazing efforts and to the dozens of selfless volunteers!

We can’t tell all the stories….but here is an example from Delta FA Cheryl Robinson about her efforts in China. Her story is below.

Hi Margaret,

I survived the trip!!! It was an awesome experience ….thank you …I’m sending some more pictures… I have to fly today to Amsterdam, I will be back Friday but I am also flying out on Saturday ….I never met Masako but I did meet Lori….. I wish I would’ve spoke with Lori beforehand she could’ve stayed at the hotel with me and I would’ve taken her around… She was very sweet.

In my group I had 20 children and two escorts no one spoke English…. Vicki took the three children to Kansas City… I had one flight attendant take the group to Columbus Ohio gate and get on the flight… My twin sister and I took the rest of the group to the Charlotte North Carolina gate … A few problems as we had storms and computer issues in Detroit last night… I guess there is a Facebook page for the families who are taking the children so one of the ladies posted many things for me on there as I had some problems making so many phone calls….

The Ohio flight was maybe one hour early…. The Kansas City flight was on time I think… And unfortunately the Charlotte North Carolina flight was delayed more than one hour, But I was with that group… I would love to go to North Carolina when the group comes to Detroit to fly to Beijing in August I think they might need me….. I might get another flight attendant to help me…. There are two children who need special attention… And the man escorting them speaks no English!!!! I thought it was difficult for him to deal with the younger children.  But we will be in contact before I leave again of course… I will need to stay 2 nights in Beijing when I return because it is a lot of work… And the one lady Grace offered me to stay at her house but I might stay at a hotel and visit her….

In Detroit the Delta Airlines in-flight helped organize food and treats and drinks….everything to be delivered to a gate and we all sat around ….had pizza and lots of candy and drinks!!!

We can talk later today thank you again for everything Margaret.

This mission took place on April 21-24, 2013. Alex Restrepo, mission coordinator, and his team went to paint an orphanage in Bogota, Colombia, home to 75 children. The team donated painting materials, soccer uniforms, and most importantly their time and love. The children wanted to be part of the painting process. It is amazing how strangers can bring so much joy to children in an orphanage. Moreover, the love, excitement, and appreciation from the children will forever change the volunteers’ lives because they know they are doing wonderful work.

Check out the video from our mission here.

I was in the Seychelles this year to celebrate Carnival de Victoria. During my stay I met Fazila Dahall a journalist and former war correspondent who asked Sandy to present a 5 minute over view of trafficking. On the spot and a one take wonder, it happened. Thank you Fazila for the opportunity to share with you our work at Airline Ambassadors International. We would be happy to work with any hospitality organization that needs help in awareness training efforts. We have held almost 20 trainings in airports, institutions and travel related organizations like Travelocity and Sabre Holdings. And we look forward to working with you soon. Dear Nancy!  I want you to know that our mission in Bogota was a huge success!

Well, I think so.  We worked on 2 of the boys’ rooms … we finished one to absolute completion … and it is beautiful.  Gina and I left Alex and the others to finish up the other room, and I have no doubts that they did a great job.
It was an absolute pleasure meeting Jay and Michelle .. I can’t wait to see what they put together for the Public Service Announcement.  How can they go wrong with Marta, Alex and those beautiful children.
Nancy, thank you again and again for coming into our lives and introducing us to Alex and Adrianna.  They are angels on earth … and I’m so happy to somehow be apart of all of your lives!

Guys, I have no words to describe how grateful I am with all of you.  What a special team!! Your presence, time and talent was so valuable for the sucess of this mission and for the kids at the Orphanage.  On behalf of all of them, I THANK YOU for making the difference.  It takes so little to give so much.
Please send me all the good photos you have, as I only have like 5 I took with my phone and need more to expose and show the orphanage to the world.

Thank you again and God bless you for such a beautiful heart you all have!

Love,

Alex Restrepo

Burkina_Faso Here are some pictures of Olivia from Burkina Faso whom we escorted from Chicago to Paris. AA flight attendants Terry Bobbitt and Masako Doi  each accompanied her on a portion of her journey.  Retired ORDAA F/A Margaret Strohl brought the 2 boys from CMH to ORD where they met Anne Tepe.

“The boys….so adorable, polite and sweet…can’t say enough about them! The little guy, Karim,  was so sad to leave and cried most of the way. The big guy, Hervann,  was trying to be so strong but he was sad, too. Please know, it was a very positive experience and the Paris police were very helpful and kind. They met the flight and went out of their way to help us.  I sure hope to be able to help with another escort in the not too distant future. Thanks for all you do,  Anne Tepe

Thanks to thank Cheryl Robinson for leading the mission to Philippines. She and her amazing team which includes Angeline Tran, Nancy B., Traci Kelly, and Ann Hanson. They visited Shepard of the Hills Children’s home, in Quezon City, bringing food, clothes, shoes, music instruments, toys, school supplies, and hygiene products to the children’s home. The team also enjoyed a day at the beach and had fun doing crafts outside. They helped clean up the orphanage and attended church together bonding with individual kids and making friends for life.  AAI is proud to have such an incredible team giving their time to serve and spend time with children that need love. There is no greater feeling and satisfaction that we get from knowing that we have made a difference in a child’s life.

TammyMeades_firstescort“I met 17 yr old Margarita at DFW when she was on her way home from her scoliosis evaluation at Shriner’s. She was very sweet and we talked about her 12 siblings and life in Belize.

How heartwarming to see her family so excited to see her!

At the airport in Belize, I said goodbye to Margarita and met Kimara whom I was taking to St. Louis for medical evaluation. She was a talkative, outgoing child and excited about her trip to the US.

How blessed I am to have shared Kimara’s first airplane trip and first escalator, elevator and moving walkway! We took the Skylink in DFW and she was surprised that it was “free”! She wanted McDonald’s for dinner and we proceeded to our gate for St.Louis.  We were met by the foster family, Charlene and her husband that took Kimara to their home. It was an amazing experience and I look forward to bringing Kimara back home on Saturday!”
