See below August notes from Escort Director Margaret Whitehead

Viva la France!

Today I was at the airport when our escort, Aicha Touahria, security lead in Paris, left for Paris with 14 year old Sadeq who was enroute home to Iraq following donated surgery in ATL, sponsored by Childspring Intl. I had the privilege of finally meeting Aicha and also our French translator and escort, JFK based F/A Laetitia Alger-Schley as she came down from New York to join us.  We had dinner together last night and it was so exciting to be able to discuss our Medical Escort Program and the ways AA in CDG can better assist us. Aicha says our friends there truly want to help.
Aicha was thrilled to again be able to see Sadeq, who was all smiles, knowing he would be back with his family in Iraq in less than 24 hours. She had met him as he traveled through CDG when he came to ATL a few months ago, accompanied by Bunny Doi.

Kathy Garza / Soad Hamden go above & beyond!

August 1, 2018 – “Monday was a beautiful sunny day in ORD. The Polish orphans were going back home after 6 weeks with host families in the US. We were so hopeful things would go much more smoothly on their return trips than when they arrived in June in the middle of ORD thunderstorms and severely impacted all their connecting flights. Everything was on time  but then suddenly the SEA/ORD flight was over 3 hours late. Kathy Garza was waiting in SEA to accompany that child to ORD. The girl could still make her connection but had one large checked bag which probably would not have made the connection since it could only be checked to ORD. But Kathy, being an ORD agent, knew exactly what to do She spoke with the ticket counter and convinced them to check the bag all the way to MUC , so all was well with this one.
But then the airplane that would bring the OMA girl back to ORD had a problem with the A/C door upon arrival in OMA and this trip canceled with no other good way to get the girl to ORD in time for the LH flight. Now we had a real problem. Our escort, retired flight attendant Dorothy Olson and this girl had to wait for the next flight to ORD which was scheduled to arrive 10 minutes before LH was scheduled to leave for MUC. The agency asked if LH would hold for this one girl. I told them no and to go ahead and try to get her rebooked for the LH flight the next day along with a native chaperone who would have to remain behind to accompany her. None of the orphans are allowed to travel alone regardless of their age. It would cost this agency $800. To change both LH tickets so nothing was done yet. Meanwhile, Soad Hamdan, ORD flight attendant who always does a terrific job coordinating the orphans’ travel for us at ORD took matters into her own hands. She was waiting at the OMA arrival gate and the flight was estimating about 15 minutes early. It arrived, Soad grabbed the girl and they ran nonstop all the way from the AE gate over to LH where the gate agents were watching for her. They weren’t holding but thanks to Kathy Garza, who had spoken with them and explained the situation, they were definitely aware, the door was still open and by some miracle she made it!
This extra effort actually saved BLOOM Agency the $800. change fee on the two tickets and shows what can be accomplished by caring enough to go that extra mile to fix an almost impossible dilemma. I am truly grateful I work with such caring volunteers. Soad and Kathy, we are all thankful and honored to have both of you on our team. You’ve proven that huge problems can be resolved by just a little extra effort.”

SHAMERE MCKENZIE
Survivor of Modern Day Slavery

Hello Friend:

I have some exciting news I want to share with you.

Shamere McKenzie Human Trafficking Ambassador for Jamaica

On July 25-26, 2018, Jamaica’s National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) hosted the first forum of its kind to be convened in the Caribbean – “The Hard Road to Recovery: From Victim to Survivor”.  The inaugural international conference was held at the Melia Braco Village Hotel in Trelawny, Jamaica.

The main objectives of the conference were to:

  • Increase public awareness to discourage these activities and to warn those who are unaware.
  • Train officials throughout the public and private sectors on identifying victims of trafficking.
  • Build capacities through legislation and institutional strengthening.

“The opening ceremony included the sashing of the island’s first-ever Human Trafficking Ambassadors, Miss Jamaica World 2017, Solange Sinclair, and Founder of The Sun Gate Foundation and human trafficking survivor, Shamere McKenzie, who also delivered the keynote address.”

“There can be no more powerful voice than that of a person who has survived and who has recovered to speak to the challenges faced by victims of trafficking on their journey to recovery from the pain and trauma they have experienced. She is one of two ambassadors who have agreed to lend their public image and voice to Jamaica’s national effort to fight against human trafficking.” Carol Palmer, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice.

It is such an honor to serve my country in this capacity. Over the years I have been making strides in the US to combat the issue of human trafficking but deep down I wanted to be involved in my birth country. I have laced up my boot strings, put on my boxing gloves and is ready to join efforts with the NATFATIP and others in Jamaica fighting trafficking.

Other speakers and presenters of the conference include:

  • Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, MP – Minister of National Security
  • Mrs. Carol Palmer, CD, JP, – Chair, NATFATIP
  • Her Excellency Ms. Magorzata Wasilewska – Head of the European Union Delegation to Jamaica
  • Her Excellency Ms. Laurie Peters – Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica
  • Mr. Mark Seibel – Deputy Chief of Mission, United States Embassy
  • Speakers from Romania, New York, Interpol and others

Shamere McKenzie Educational Scholarship in Jamaica
Earlier this year I did an interview with BBC World Service – Outlook as a follow up from a previous interview I did with my mentor Kevin Bales in the UK.  Following the interview, I was contacted by an official in Malawi, Africa asking to use my name for an educational scholarship in his country. I thought to myself, if there is a Shamere McKenzie scholarship in Africa, there ought to be one in Jamaica.  I reached out to a few people and the timing was perfect.

As a result, I have partnered with the Lasco Chin Foundation to provide the Shamere McKenzie Educational Scholarship to survivors of child sexual abuse and human trafficking. This is a small scholarship as I will be using my personal money to fund the scholarship. Therefore, please let me know if you are interested in partnering with me on this.  This scholarship is part of a bigger initiative that the foundation is doing – the Sustainable Socio-Economic Intervention (SSI) model.

LASCO Chin Foundation is a recently established non-profit organization with a mission of early intervention to help Jamaica’s at-risk youth develop the relationships, goals and capacities needed to break the cycle of poverty and crime and become productive members of society, especially as successful entrepreneurs. In pursuit of this mission, they  have designed a Sustainable Socio-Economic Intervention (SSI) model© intended to break the cycle of poverty and crime for the most disenfranchised youth living in the most troubled communities.

In September 2018, they will pilot the SSI Scholarship Program which will target high school students in a specific community and provide a comprehensive set of supporting interventions to assist them in school, at home and in their community, including, but not limited to:

  • Financial support, to cover school fees; books and school supplies; school uniform, shoes and physical education gears; transportation needs; computing needs; extracurricular activities and extra lessons to meet the needs and career goals of the targeted student (to be determined on an individual basis);
  • Nutritional support, to ensure the student has adequate food during their tenure at school;
  • Parental support, including entrepreneurship assistance for parents/guardians where needed;
  • Professional mentorship support, providing 1:1 extended supportive relationships using qualified professionals, including social workers, psychologists and educational professionals as needed; and
  • Community support, from a network of community resources.

The official launch will take place in November in Florida and will include several dignitaries from Jamaica; CEO of the Lasco Chin Foundation, Dr. Rosalie Hamilton; Founder of Lasco Chin Foundation Lasalle Chin and myself.  This event is open to the public so if you are interested in being a part of the celebration or being in part of the SSI model, please let me know and I will connect you.

Please be reminded that I am available for consulting, training and speaking events. A percentage of my honorarium and speaker fees will go towards the Shamere McKenzie Educational Scholarship in Jamaica.

Once again, thank you for your continued support and investing in survivors of human trafficking.

Kindest Regards,

Shamere McKenzie

See below a letter from Mission Leader Cheryl Robinson:
Dear Maria,
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for opening up your home and the daycare center to all of us.  We had a wonderful time getting to know you and all the children.  It’s an opportunity that does not come along very often, knowing someone like you and seeing all that you are accomplishing is amazing.   You have touched all of our hearts and souls in a way I will never be able to explain.  You are truly an angel to so many people and it has been an honor to get to know you.  We are very fortunate that Sylviya has introduced us to you.
We all had a wonderful time painting your home, playing with the children, enjoying the KFC and ice cream party, and all the fun games.   When the children and all of you were singing for us it was truly the highlight of the evening.  It’s always sad to say goodbye but I know we will see you next year and always hoping that some of the people will return but if not I will be bringing a new group.  Hoping we can continue the garden next year.
Please extend our thank you to Mr. Nordman and the staff at the school for such a wonderful luncheon and tour of his school. I hope we can come back next year and continue to build a wonderful relationship with them.  I do not have his email address to send them a thank you, so if you have it could you pass it along to me so I can send him a thank you.

Sylviya has a cash donation for you from all of us, please let me know what you do with the money and I will pass it along to the group.  We are very excited to hear what you do with it.
I will be sending those beautiful pictures with the children in their T-shirts to Angels Of Hope.   Thank you for sending them so quickly.  The children looks so beautiful as do all of you !
Once again thank you for everything… We sure enjoyed our trip.  It was an experience none of us will forget.  Until we meet again next year about the  same time.
I hope everyone enjoyed the lion safari park… I did not see any pictures yet from Victoria, but I hope it was a day everyone will remember.
Please send my love to everyone,
Thank you so much again for your hospitality,
Cheryl

Hello Grant and Sharon,
   I’d Dear Sharon and Grant,
I’d like to say a special thank you from all of us for opening up your home and sharing your lovely children with us.  We all had a wonderful time and I can’t thank you enough for all the hard work everyone did preparing that delicious meal for us.   I’m sure it was the first time most of us had the experience of eating kudu.  I heard that was a gift to you and the children and I can’t thank you enough for sharing it with us.  It’s something we will never forget.
We all enjoyed playing games, listening to the children sing and dance (which was awesome),  enjoying local food prepared by you, painting, gardening, and also helping with the wood pile… I hope that Grant’s foot has healed.
I know they really enjoyed learning how to cook… Thank you so much for letting them help.  Also playing and holding baby Lilya was awesome.  I know Dorothy really enjoyed it and felt needed.  I think the biggest hit though was Chris… The children really loved him we were so fortunate that he joined our trip.
Thank you Grant for doing that study on most of us, we were all discussing it on our Safari and can’t wait to really look into it now that we are home.
Sylviya will be contacting you about our cash donation.   Please let me know what you do with the money and I will share it with the group.   I am looking forward to next year already, please let me know if there is anything special in advance that you might need or want.   We will be planning the trip about the same time of year, so see you just now !
Sending our love,
Please take care,
Thank you so much,
Cheryl
THANK YOU from local coordinator Silviya Simmonds to AAI Team:

Hello Everyone

Trust all settled back now and over jet lag – although for some of you back up into the air!!

It was soo lovely to meet you all very special angels and  hope that one day well be able to meet again also seeing you again Larry was so special:)

I would like to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for being such a blessing to both Maria, Grant and Sharon and for your GENEROSITY, KINDNESS,  LOVE, CARING and COMPASSION.  Also all the time and effort put into your trip which really meant a lot to them and the children.   This was so much appreciated and know the kids brag about getting visitors from America, spending time with them,  makes them feel special and not forgotten.   Dr Tom you were such an amazing blessing, thank you so much  – maybe tho some kids didn’t think so at the time!!

Thank you soo much for EVERYTHING – all absolutely amazing:):)  ALL the goodies  – WOW it was just like Christmas!   Please convey big thanks to everyone else who contributed as well. Also for all the hard work and effort in the projects being such a BIG help and helping make such a BIG difference.   Just to get basic necessities is an everyday challenge so real needs were met through your generosity, kindness and caring. Both Grant and Maria will let you know the difference your generosity has made in their lives – another big amazing wow!

You have given hope in the midst of often hopeless and helpless circumstances not just in a very practical way but also showing love through your caring compassionate hearts.   We know seeds of love have been planted and trust they will be nurtured and grow and will be passed on to impact not only the kids own lives but the wider community as well.

So many thanks to you all and all contributed to an amazing mission – words don’t seem adequate for the gratitude felt but a special big thanks to AAI and Nancy for the ongoing love and amazing support. Also to you Cheryl for being such an amazing mission leader – the BEST-  for all the time, hard work and effort in making the trip so enjoyable and successful both from the humanitarian and adventure side.

May God continue to bless you all and your families.

Lots of love and hugs across the miles

Sil 🙂 xx

I,m getting ready for my exciting 5mnth trip to Australia and NZ next week.

Note from Margaret Whitehead – Escort Coordinator
Here are some pics from Kathy Garza’s escort on 03 Jul. She is an ORD agent and has only been in the program about a month. But what a super terrific escort she has turned out to be! On this trip, I was asked by Frontier Horizons for an escort to go to MGA and accompany 4 Nicaraguan orphans to MIA. We were only given 3 days notice but Kathy, who was visiting family in LIM, said she would take the all nighter LIM/MIA, go on to MGA and travel with them back to MIA. Their destination was ORF but she was supposed to only get them to the ORF gate then she could go back to ORD. However, their flight from MGA was late and they misconnected, causing her to have to spend the night with them in MIA. She must have been exhausted by then but she never once complained. The next morning she took them to the ORF gate, then she went on home to ORD.
Note from Kathy Garza to Margaret!
Hi Margaret,
I hope everything well by you, here are some pictures with the kids.
It was very rewarding to see smiles in their faces after a long wait and the overnight. We even had time to learn how to crochet …ha ha !!!   Thanks!!
