Jamaica joins UNODC’s Blue Heart campaign to end human trafficking
April 2018 – Jamaica has become the first Caribbean nation to join the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking, an international awareness-raising initiative by UNODC to encourage involvement and action to help prevent this crime.
The Government of Jamaica, in partnership with UNODC and with the assistance of Airline Ambassadors International (AAI), launched the Campaign on 28 March, under the auspices of Delroy Chuck, Minister of Justice; Horrace Chang, Minister of National Security; Carol Palmer, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice; and José Vila del Castillo, UNODC Regional Representative for Central America and the Caribbean.
The launching ceremony, organized by the National Task Force against Trafficking in Persons (NATFATIP) of the Ministry for Justice of Jamaica, took place at Emancipation Park in Kingston.
At the event, both Ministers of Justice and National Security rejected and condemned human trafficking and underlined the commitment of the Jamaican Government to end this scourge.
Carol Palmer, the Permanent Secretary in the Justice Ministry, and Chair of NATFATIP stressed that Governments must “place themselves on the right side of history in the struggle against modern slavery”, adding that “collective silence provides a fertile ground for human trafficking to thrive”.
José Vila del Castillo said: “trafficking in persons is an extremely serious crime, generating illicit profits of $ 32 billion every year. It is the third most lucrative criminal activity, after drug and arms trafficking. Jamaica is joining countries that openly recognize human trafficking as a threat to human dignity and human rights.”
Also participating were several Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Jamaica, directors of academic and cultural institutions, students, as well as representatives of civil society and the private sector.
The highlight of the launch was the simultaneous symbolic turning on of blue lights at three locations in Kingston, reflecting the central theme of the Blue Heart Campaign. The locations were carefully chosen given their significance in the fight against slavery and oppression.
The Blue Heart Campaign continues to grow throughout Central America and the Caribbean, as well as in different countries around the world, in order to spread a global message: HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT FOR SALE.

This is your chance to make a difference in so many children’s lives. We have the opportunity to help 80 pre-school children and babies at Mpumelelo Daycare center, along with two separate orphanages where up to 60 children live. The Daycare center was started so the parents of these children can find or go to work without worrying about their babies. Before the daycare center these children were often left alone all day.
Our trip will include entertainment by the children, several projects, helping with a food pantry, visiting the Shantytown where they live, games, learning about their culture, dinner party at each orphanage and half day excursion in Johannesburg visiting the Soweto and museums.
We will be staying in Johannesburg at a wonderful guest house where breakfast and dinner is provided. You will fly into JNB on your own, where you will be picked up at and taken to the lodge.

Many thanks to our partner Crime Stoppers Caribbean, Bermuda and Latin America for coordinating training in San Salvador and Guatemala City mid May. Central America is considered one of the most dangerous places on earth and this training targeted towards the transportation / hospitality industry was very much needed for front line employees enabling them to recognize and report potential trafficking cases to law enforcement. We appreciate support from Crime Stoppers and Girls Rights Foundation.
See local TV coverage on Canal 33.
AAI team included Nancy Rivard, Alex Restrepo, Kathryn Griffin, Jose Redondo Skye Jannery Barney and Marie Rivard
Alejo Campos, welcomed our group to his home upon arrival in El Salvador and here are some pictures from the first training on May 18 at the Foreign Ministry of El Salvador, presenters also included UNODC, IOM, and other stakeholders
.
The following day in Guatemala City, the Ministry of Guatemala signed an MOU with CrimeStoppers international – see TV coverage here from Canal 7 and this video. Afterwards the team provided human trafficking awareness training to Uber drivers including a scenario of a trafficking incident, which an Uber driver correctly reported. Alex Restrepo played the Uber driver, Jose Redondo the trafficker and Skye Jannery-Barney, the victim.
The following day we provided another even larger training in Antigua to tourism professionals and law enforcement. Crimestoppers shared their new on line reporting tool and presentations were given by UNODC, IOM and many other tourism and community leaders. Even the First Lady’s office was represented. Guatemala is a Blue Heart partner and has developed an excellent TV Commercial to build awareness with the public. The AAI team adapted our scenario to highlight an alert hotel employee (Marie Rivard) who distracted the trafficker (Jose Redondo) so the victim (Skye Jannery) could get to the ladies room while law enforcement was contacted. The program was well received by all.
We also had time to visit our adopted project Casa Jackson – All God’s Children orphanage children’s program and even pulled off a surprise birthday party for Alejo Campos of Crimestoppers!
Many thanks to Ms. Miho Okada, of the Caux Round Table Japan, All Nippon Holdings and Gillian Murray of the UNODC Blue Heart Campaign for helping with our first training in Japan!
The training was hosted by Hiroshhi Ishida, Executive Director of the Caux Round Table Japan and attended by All Nippon Airlines and Japan Airlines staff as well as officials from government and NGO’s.
Remarks were made by Not for Sale Japan, the International Organization of Migration, and AAI’s team – Nancy Rivard, Donna Hubbard, Andrea Hobart and Deb Quigley participated. Gillian Murray presented on UNODC’s Blue Heart Campaign. Local NGO’s such as ECPAT, Lighthouse Center, Amnesty International and the Japan Christian Women’s Organization also participated.
The training workshop took place on April 18th with an enthusiastic response from all participants. This was the first workshop of its kind in Japan.
While there we had some fun too!

In October – Nov 2018 Saber Rock traveled to Afghanistan to set up our Airline Ambassadors office, deliver humanitarian aid, and begin projects to help make Afghanistan great again!
Saber joined AAI’s Board of Advisor’s in July. His film won the “Most Inspiring Documentary” and also “Most Exceptional Human Being” Award at the 2017 Hollywood Movie Awards. Here is the movie trailer.
Saber established an Airline Ambassadors office in Kabul and also signed an agreement to work with Rana University as an international Adviser of Western countries.
He is a celebrity in Afghanistan and made several TV appearances on the trip including Tolo, Ariana and Khursheed television shows. Public exposure alerted the Taliban and also put him in danger. When he began a distribution of shoes on behalf of Airline Ambassadors to delighted children, he received warning just in time and narrowly escaped a suicide bomber coming to kill him.
Thank you Rock for bravery and commitment!
Here is some background.: Saber was a young battle hardened veteran when he was assigned to work with a small hand-picked team of U.S. Marines deployed to Helmand Province, one of the most violent regions in Afghanistan. Their mission was to drive a wedge between the Taliban and the Afghan villagers. All of their communication would have to pass through Rock, making him the lynchpin for winning over the hearts and minds of the Afghan people. The “Rock” became the critical link between insurgents and our country for over 11 years and counting, as Rock is still committed to helping his country transform into a nation that respects and educates its citizens. General Allen, his USMC Commander, said; “He has an indomitable spirit”.
ONE MANS FIGHT AGAINST THE TALIBAN – CNN
Although Saber Rock could have continued with his high paying and safe job as Chancellor of Kabul University, he chose instead to help his country during war and exposed himself as a rare patriot. Although our society measures capacities for worth by college degrees and the attainment of high posts, Saber’s will to contribute to a better nation despite personal danger while exhibiting, love, humor, energy and commitment is a character that you too will certainly recognize and envy. He has a command of seven middle eastern languages and has an undeniable charisma that makes him a brother to everyone he meets.
- Note: In 2009 Airline Ambassadors signed an MOU with the Humanitarian Affairs Division of the U.S. Armed Forces. We look forward to humanitarian initiatives with with his expertise and support to help orphans and vulnerable children in Afghanistan.

2) The education of the children: The current building has no common area where the children can study, read, congregate or learn. The new design will have an entire area dedicated to a quiet library and incorporates a large central gathering space with tables and chairs that can be used for teaching all of the students at once. Additionally, each child has desk space in their room.
3) The sustained success of the home: Our Small Community of Family is currently not self-sufficient financially. We would like to install a small professional oven in the new kitchen to help start a micro-bakery that would simultaneously supply jobs for the young adults from the home and provide an income for the orphanage by selling their baked goods to the community to support the education and health of the children.
So, although the children’s home will serve 20-45 orphans and abandoned children within its walls, the design also serves the larger community and makes the children home more self-sufficient and an asset to the community
The projected timeline of the construction is 9 months after completion of fundraising.ArtistsActivists is estimating the cost for the new building to be $535/sq meter, consistent with the other projects built to American standards in the area of Carrefour (according to Architecture for Humanity). The design for the new orphanage is 560 sq.meters. ArtistsActivists’ cost per square foot is lowered slightly from the average due to the fact that it is not air conditioned but rather naturally ventilted
1. Increased number of kids: Helps more kids: Kominote Ti Fanmi Nou will be able to take in 25 more children than they are legally allowed to in their current building.
2. Sanitation: There are only two toilets in the current orphanage, our new design will have six composting toilets
3. Cleanliness: There are only two showers in the orphanage, our new design will incorporate six showers that will use water collected in the cistern from the roof as well as from the water well.
4. Gardens and Playspace: There is no interior space to play and no exterior place to play that is safe and healthy. The new design has a garden space that will grow foods that the children can then eat, and there is an interior courtyard space that gives the kids an interior/exterior place to play.
5. Water Collection: ArtistsActivists hopes to install a water cistern that can store the rain water collected (there is no running municipal water in this area of Haïti).
6. Safety and Security: The current house sits in a compound, which is good, but the house itself has doors to the outside from every bedroom. The new design has a central courtyard that is able to be completely closed off from the outdoors meaning that there are two levels of security instead of just one.
7. Classroom and Study: There are no current classrooms or study spaces for the kids, they study on an old board leaned up against a concrete brick wall. The new design will incorporate a library, a study area, an upstairs lounge area, and desk space in each room.
