Volunteer Programs

It's a lifestyle...

AA flight attendant Daggi Wallace is also a renowned artist.  She established a special program in honor of her late mother, Moni.  As part of the "Moni's Kids" program she is painting portraits of 30 Haitian orphans (whom she interviewed during the AAI mission in July). The frame of each portrait reflects each child's hopes and dreams.  Originals will be displayed in November at the Bon Voyage Party for the Cruise 4 Haiti in Miami.  Proceeds from the sale of these paintings will provide for the children's education.  Click here for more information.

Breaking News

Fighting Human Trafficking
On July 1st Congressional representatives Smith and Oberstar hosted a briefing for airline partners to communicate the important role that airline personnel can play in human trafficking prevention.

Members of Congress spoke as well as officials from the State Department and Homeland Security.  Airline Ambassadors and Innocents at Risk spoke about their efforts to support the initiative and launch a flight attendant awareness program.

American Airlines responded immediately and in late July released a bulletin to flight personnel giving flight crews procedural instructions in cases where trafficking is suspected on their flights.

AA is the first airline to take the initiative to educate personnel on this important subject, which will also be included in annual Emergency Procedure Training for flight crews.

Haiti News

Building Safe Houses in Haiti
In May, Airline Ambassadors announced the donation of safe houses to UNICEF and thanks to your support AAI is constructing TEN facilities for trafficked children near the border crossings between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  AAI's Dave Rivard is overseeing construction and the first two houses will soon be completed in Belladère.  Many thanks to Carl Innis of Procuserve who donated the houses.  AAI partners on this important project are UNICEF, IBESR (Haitian Social Services) and BPM (Bureau for the Protection of Minors).

Additionally AAI will partner with UNICEF to conduct trafficking awareness training at airports in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Building Community
Hundreds of thousands of families are living in tents outside Port-au-Prince and these internally displaced people (IDPs) need a place to live. However, they need more than shelter; they need water, electricity, access to education, health care and most importantly, jobs.  Building sustainable communities is AAI's focus in the Central Plateau, working alongside our dynamic local partners, Frère Armand of Little Brothers and Sisters of the Incarnation, in Pandiassou, and Yves Prophète, of Global Vision Citadelle Ministries, in Mirebalais. Eight volunteer engineers donated their time to survey the sites and develop design plans.

Residents will receive training in construction (using AAI's CASA Manual) and vocational training in sustainable agriculture, electrical and computer skills. Check out Dave Rivard's comment in Time Magazine!

A Haiti Adventure
Ruth Matranga came to Haiti on the first American Airline relief flight on January 17, and was overwhelmed by the strength of character of the survivors of the earthquake. On an early Airline Ambassador relief flight, she met the founder of Haiti Street Kids. He introduced her to dozens of homeless children and youth he was helping, many of them former restaveks (indentured child servants), and she was determined to make a difference.  She helped coordinate arrangements for actor Sean Penn to send a medical relief team to the Solino slum neighborhood where many street kids are living. On trips every month, she hand carried donations for the boys as well as dozens of musical instruments for Trinity Music School, and soccer equipment for L'Athletique, AAI's adopted soccer program.  Read more...

Chile: Post Earthquake Rebuilding

Airline Ambassadors Mission Coordinator Corey Aungst was accompanied by Chilean-born Ricardo Torres Mateluna to determine how best AAI could help the people of Cauquenes, which is located at the epicenter of the huge earthquake that hit Chile on February 27th. Ricardo writes:

We arrived in Cauquenes where the devastation and lack of governmental and international help was appalling.  AAI's presence in the area is much needed and welcome.  Read more of the story...

Bravo to:

Daniel Sheth, Airline Ambassadors' Board Member, Reports

Jackie's House, Dominican Republic

The Mandell School partnered with Airline Ambassadors for their second trip to the Dominican Republic to visit two orphanages in La Romana and Santo Domingo.  The group of 40 participants built a hydroponic garden, provided lunch for over 140 children on a daily basis, purchased and installed air conditioners in the children’s dormitories, provided cash donations, made a sizable shipment of approximately $34,000 (retail value) of clothing by J. Crew, took the children to the beach and much more.  Shipping services were all donated by DHL.  Special thanks to Gabriella Rowe, Ken Cohen, Lisa Stein, James McCummings, Leah Peskin, J. Crew and DHL for making this wonderful trip happen!
