Donna HubbardAirline Ambassadors was proud to have one of our top trainers Donna Hubbard present at the United Nations Conference  coordinated by the Holy See and the Santa Marta Group “Ending Human Trafficking by 2030″ – the Role of global Partnerships in Eradicating Modern Slavery” on Friday, April 7, 2016, presided by H.E. Archbishop Bernadito Auza.

The Santa Marta Group is an alliance of international police chiefs and bishops from around the world working together with civil society in a process endorsed by Pope Francis who called it “an open wound on the body of contemporary society”, to eradicate human trafficking and modern day slavery.

AAI began working with the Archbishop after the earthquake in Haiti, where he was posted as the Nuncio. He is currently the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN and OAS and hosted Pope Francis on his recent visit to the United States.

AAI trainer, AA flight attendant and human trafficking survivor, Donna Hubbard presented with such luminaries as His Excellency Mogens Lykketoft, President of the UN General Assembly, Cardinal Nichols, Archbishop of Westminister, Commissioner Kevin Hyland, UK’s Anti Slavery Commissioner, Actress Mira Sorvino, Goodwill Ambassador for UNODC and many more.

Donna shared Mira Sorvinothe riveting story of how she was trafficked and found the courage to break free which prompted a standing ovation. She also praised the leadership of the Catholic Church on the most important human rights issue of our time. Archbishop Auza also highlighted the leadership of Airline Ambassadors in establishing best practices on the issue of human trafficking and spearheading action in the travel industry.  donna presents cropped

Pope Francis sent an inspirational letter which opened the conference whose purpose was to catalyze coordination to implement Sustainable Development Goal Targets 5.2, 8.7 and 16.2 which commit UN Member States to  eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation” and take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labor, end modern slavery and human trafficking.

Barney and DonnaThe resurgence of slavery is one of the biggest tragedies of our modern globalized world. According to ILO estimates in 2012 there are 21 million victims worldwide. In many places the population has grown faster than the economy, leaving many economically vulnerable.  Millions are migrating from impoverished rural areas to cities, and from poorer to wealthier countries in search of work or refuge.  Criminals are able to deceive them by posing as legitimate labor recruiters.  Human Trafficking and modern slavery have a devastating impact on individual victims, who often suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against themselves or their families or even murder.

At the official dinner afterwards, many of the distinguished panel downloaded and praised AAI’s TIP Line Smart phone APP as a premier reporting tool for human trafficking. Charlies Angels one

AAI Trifold 2016 v4

donna hubbardunnamed (1)Kudos to U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar as well as U.S. Representatives Dina Titus and Barbara Comstock.

As part of the FAA Re-Authorization Act this year, both the US House and Senate have acknowledged the important role of front line airline employees (such as flight attendants) to combat the fight against human trafficking.

Stop Trafficking on Planes         STOP Act of 2016

March 17, WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and today announced that provisions to help prevent human trafficking passed the Senate Commerce Committee this week. The Stop Trafficking On Planes (STOP) Act which was introduced by Klobuchar and Warner earlier this month would require training for certain airline industry employees to recognize and report suspected human trafficking to law enforcement. The legislation builds on the voluntary Blue Lightning Initiative currently administered by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation. The Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2016, which includes a provision similar to the STOP Act, passed the Commerce Committee this week and will now head to the full Senate for a vote. The STOP ACT has been endorsed by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, and by the anti-trafficking organizations Polaris and ECPAT-USA, and a companion version of the bill has been introduced in the House by Representatives Dina Titus (D-NV) and Barbara Comstock (R-VA).

“As the Senate works to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration, I’m glad that my colleagues on the Commerce Committee agree about the need to do more to prevent human trafficking,” Warner said. “We can and should equip airline personnel to detect and report human trafficking, in order to help save victims and bring perpetrators to justice.”

“Flight attendants are on the front lines in the battle against trafficking. They want to help, and we need to arm them with the tools they need to identify and report these heinous crimes,” Klobuchar said. “This action in the Commerce Committee brings us one step closer to stepping up efforts to stop trafficking wherever it exists – on land, at sea, and in the sky.

3S_Beneficiary_Button-2This bill is certainly a step in the right direction”, said AAI President, Nancy Rivard. “Transportation professionals are among the best-placed to identify human trafficking situations. Innocents at Risk brought attention to this issue as early as 2008, and we have been working to educate flight crew since 2010.

AAI has  provided 40 trainings on human trafficking awareness in the US and abroad.  This year we are planning airport trainings in Las Vegas, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta, Latvia, Amsterdam and Bogota.”

UNWTOSandy Dhuyvetter 1Board member, Sandy Dhuyvetter, presented AAI initiatives on child protection at the World Tourism meeting in Berlin this month. See article below:

Private sector committed to fight child exploitation in tourism

The 31st Meeting of the World Tourism Network on Child Protection, held on the occasion of ITB Berlin, focused on the role and initiatives of the private sector to fight Child Exploitation in tourism. Awareness raising, training of staff and the implementation of measures along the whole value chain of tourism were pointed out as critical.

“We need to unite to fight child exploitation and the commitment of the private sector is key” said UNWTO Secretary-General opening the meeting.

Carol Bellamy, Chair of the Network, recalled the role of the Network as a platform to share research and good practices in the fight against the exploitation of children in tourism.

At the meeting, the Chair of the High Level Global Task Force to End Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism, Najat Maalla M’jid, shared the first findings of the Global Study carried out by the Task Force. Lack of reporting, weak legislation and the anonymity of the Internet were pointed out as some of the main challenges in child protection from sexual exploitation in the sector. The report aims to also address the chronic lack of robust evidence and comparable data on this issue.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) stressed the importance of providing training to the staff on how to identify possible situation of child exploitation as well as dealing with new emerging trends in the sector such as ‘voluntourism’ while the TUI Group shared their initiative ‘A collective NO to sexual exploitation of children in holiday destinations initiatives to promote the inclusion of measures to prevent and fight the exploitation of children within the whole tourism value chain including actions on training, awareness raising among host communities
Other initiatives presented included a project from the Network of Strategic and International Studies which evaluates best practices from around the world and work of the Airline Ambassadors International which focus on training airline professionals to flight human trafficking.

The World Tourism Network on Child Protection is an open-ended network facilitated by UNWTO featuring the multi-stakeholder participation of a range of tourism stakeholders – governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), tourism industry groups and media associations. Its mandate is to prevent all forms of youth exploitation in the tourism sector (i.e. sexual exploitation, child labour and child trafficking). The Network’s meetings, held annually at the worlds’ foremost Travel and Tourism Fairs, serve as a platform to exchange experiences and best practices, present awareness-raising materials and capacity building tools, and promote the adoption of professional codes of conduct or other responsible practices in line with the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.”

3S_Beneficiary_Button-2AAI is the proud recipient of grant funding from 3 Strands Global and is planning trainings in Las Vegas, Houston, Atlanta, Latvia, Amsterdam and Bogota coming up this year.  Stay posted!

hugo and chrisIt has been just over a year since the beginning of AAI’s Sponsorship Program at Shepherd of the Hills Children’s Foundation (SOTH) in the Philippines.  It has been a very busy and rewarding experience for Maricon Pulga (Social Worker and Sponsorship Coordinator at SOTH) and myself.  We would like to thank all of our sponsors, and especially Brett Halverson and the Howard Charitable Trust, for making the sponsorship of 34 children possible!
Our October Philippine mission trip was also a big success.  We had a fantastic group of AAI volunteers and we painted two of the boy’s homes and installed hand-made curtains.  We also took all the children to a wave pool excursion in Subic Bay.

So many children are benefiting at home and in school from our sponsorship program.  During our recent trip, we noticed that many of the kids at the orphanage are growing up fast.  This inspired a new endeavor.  Brian O’Reilly and Philip Page donated money for our very first College Sponsorship Program through AAI!  John Anthony dela Fuente is now enrolled in a two-year, Computer Training course at Kolehiyo Ng Subic. This is very exciting and provides hope for all the children! (see his picture to left)

martine and kids at diakonos

Martine Longchamp lost her brother in the Haiti Earthquake of 2010.  Since that time she has carried on his legacy and taken personal responsibility for orphaned children via Diakonos International Children’s Home outside of Port-au-Prince.

AAI is supporting school sponsorship for these children that will change their lives. Your gift of $35 a month will pay their school fees, provide for school uniforms, school books, etc.

Children over the age of 18 that have grown up at Diakonos’ Small Community of Family are not forced out of the home. Most of them are still attending school, and the sponsorship you provide for them will help cover their education and learning a professional trade. When they are ready, they are encouraged to find a job to support themselves and move out or use their skills to help-out at the children’s home.

You can also write to them and/or join us to visit them on missions. Please check the 2018 Calendar of Missions to see the dates of our next mission trips to Haiti.
